The Great Firewall of China ( a reference to the Great Wall of China ) is a network firewall, a filtering system implemented by the Chinese government (by the Ministry of Public Security) in order to control, restrain and censor the access to Internet content in China.
The Great Firewall uses different methods for filtering, like blocking access to certain IP address (this will target all websites if they are on a shared server with blocked IPs) or DNS poisoning. URL and packet filtering are also part of the methods used by the censorship system, targeting controversial keywords in the URL and blocking such content.
The reason for the censorship is mainly a political. Because of the freedom of expression and the access to any information the Internet might offer, the Chinese Government decided to implement this censorship in order to avoid any government critics. Many online dissident journalists or bloggers have been jailed for expressing opinions contrary to government views.
Sexually suggestive material, violence, terrorism material, gambling and content deemed as “immoral” is also blocked.
Here is a list of blocked websites censored/blocked in China: Google+, Blogspot, Technorati, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Isohunt and many other social networking sites. Amnesty International and Human Rights watch are also blocked. The international version of Skype does not work properly in China, but there is another version controled and monitored by the Government: Skype.tom.com. If you tried to access directly Skype on http://www.skype.com, you will be redirected to http://www.skype.tom.com, the Chinese version of Skype. Chinese authorities have been accused of monitoring conversations made with the Tom Tom Skype version.
